The three-story timber and stone house designed by their parents and built by their uncle remained strong against the harsh Alaskan elements after thirty-six years. One of only a few large homes in the area, the spacious house had been the family’s base since their parents were killed in a horrific car crash. No matter where any Kyndall sibling found themselves in life, they knew they could always come home.

The locals simply called it “The Kyndall House,” and everyone who’d lived in Stewart’s Crossing for more than a few months knew how to find it. Tucked away in an open meadow surrounded by towering pines, the house sat on fifteen acres at the end of an uphill driveway. A break in the trees offered unobstructed views of the bay and mountains.

Donovan had added his own touches to the big house over the years but otherwise left it as it had been when their parents lived there. Their mother’s superb taste extended from rustic architecture to classic and understated décor. Each of the siblings still had their own bedrooms, left untouched in between visits except for the cleaning crew who came in once a week.

Alexa wondered how long it would be before Donovan had a family of his own to fill the quiet halls and great rooms when they weren’t around. She believed one day she’d return to Stewart’s Crossing and make her home, but the FBI was her career choice for now.

Owen slept in his room down the hall and Tori occupied the guest room on the third floor. Alexa felt comfortable knowing Tori wouldn’t attempt to jump out of a third-story window. She didn’t actually believe Tori would try to make an escape, but the erratic behavior she’d exhibited since they found her in the cabin left Alexa wondering what her old friend had experienced.

She walked the dark hallway and made her way down the stairs, her hand gripping the polished log railing. She knew Donovan was still awake and in his office. Doubtful she’d find solace in sleep tonight, Alexa walked down another wide hallway off the great room and stopped at his office door.

A single lamp, dimmed to its lowest setting, filled only a corner of the room. Donovan faced one of the two picture windows, his back to her. Without turning, he said, “Sleeplessness seems to be contagious.”

Alexa crossed the room to stand beside her brother. “Owen’s out, and Tori was asleep when I checked on her. Did you even try getting some rest?”

Donovan scrubbed a hand over his unshaven face and shook his head. “I don’t want another body showing up tomorrow, Alexa. I can’t figure this guy out, and people in town are scared.”

“Let’s talk this through. What do we know?”

“You should sleep.”

“No, I should be helping you.” Alexa sat down in his plush, leather desk chair and spun it around to face him. “I didn’t tell any of you this, but the last case I worked on was nothing but a trail of roadblocks.
